The problem with the Golden Rule

The Golden Rule is relativistic - its only as good as the person you're in front of. "Do unto you as you would have them do unto you" What do I do if it's Charles Manson who is the basis of comparison?

However, standard moral beliefs are necessary to a stable society. There is no society that exists where rape is glorified and murder sanctioned.

  3. Hahaha... he thinks it means "do unto others as you think they would do to you"...

I don't think he understands the recurring theme in Christianity is to love the undeserving.

  4. Pretty sure that Charles Manson wouldn't have liked being brutally murdered...

  5. Honestly, I don't even think Hitchens came for a philosophical debate. He's just here to bash on Christianity in front of the body of Christ.

  9. James, I suspected this is all we'd get from Hitchens. Hitchens is so popular and I think by taking on Craig he's completely destroyed his reputation. Hopefully people will finally see through his "arguments."

  11. The idea that murder and rape are universally despised points to the idea of a universal moral code. A moral code points to a moral Lawgiver. If evolution is used as a basis for a moral code, then murder and rape could be considered acceptable if it confers upon an individual a survival advantage.

  12. He seems to not realize that the golden rule works that you do to others the things and type of things that you want done to you (you can see why it's so self-explanatory...) as such, it holds even if you met Charles Manson, first because it would obligate him to treat you as he would _want_ to be treated (respect, etc.) Usually disturbed people like Charles Mansion deep down want something more kind and substantial than things that are considered morally wrong.... But I'll leave that to the psychologists (you know you're out there... :) to explain.
