An Arrogance to the Christian view

It seems that there is an arrogance to the Christian view that all of this design and creation is only for us. I can't swallow it.

  1. Not really an argument against God existing, only against a particular view in theology. IMO

  3. it's actually amazing to see the arguments stripped down this way - without the rhetorical wizardry hiding the man behind the curtain...

  4. Where did Craig say it's just for us?

  5. I wonder how many cocktails Hitchens has in him, yes that is an ad hom lol

  6. Craig didnt, but that's taught in some Sunday schools. I think it's an overreaction to evolution. You aren't just from a monkey!!!

  7. i think it is implied in the teleological argument... no?

  8. Um, Thats not what we believe. Everything was created through Jesus and for Jesus. It says it in Hebrews.

  9. No: all that's implied in the teleological argument is that nature displays design. It doesn't follow that it's all for us (or that it isn't); that's simply a separate issue.

Agreed, Mark, it probably is taught in some Sunday schools. But in a debate, one is supposed to engage with the arguments and statements actually advanced by the other side.

  10. No I don't believe so.

If life exists elsewhere it's fine tuned for that life as well. CS Lewis spoke about the possibility of other life and how it has nothing to say about the truthfulness of Christian theism.

  11. It's upsetting to see the author of this blog so biased. I was hoping to get a fair, objective break-down of the arguments, but I can see I'm not going to get that. Pathetic.

  12. My understanding is that the point of the fine tuning argument is that it is fine tuned for intelligent life. us...

  13. Mike: what are you referring to?

  14. Mike, where are you seeing bias?

  15. It's all just for us ? maybe god made the big old universe because he likes to look at nebulae as much as us ? maybe God has all sorts of other reasons for universe he has no obligation to tell us about, why would we need to be the "ONLY" reason god creates ? God looked at the universe before he put man on it and said it was "good" If anyone thinks the universe is only valuable if it contains someone like Hitchens he must be an arrogant atheist.

  16. "Mike, where are you seeing bias?"

The statement "I can't swallow it" as well as the obvious lack of content in Hitchen's arguments. All too blatant. I'm a deist and I'd like to get a fairly insightful look into the debate.

  17. Mike,
I believe the I can't swallow it comment is a quote of Hitchens. Hitchens is saying he can't swallow what he see as need to be so arrogant.
